Free Citizen CPR Training Event | Health

The Virginia Capitol Region of the American Red Cross and the City of Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services are joining forces to provide free Red Cross Citizen CPR and first aid training at three city fire stations on “Save-A-Life Saturday,” March 19, 2011 from noon -1:00.

The event features instruction in hands-only Citizen CPR, controlling external bleeding and managing shock. After the training, participants also receive a free Red Cross first aid kit, fire and safety information, free lunch and tours of the fire stations.

This is part of a one-day nationwide event providing training at more than 100 locations across the country. The inspiration came from the lifesaving actions taken by bystanders following the shootings in Tucson. The Red Cross is able to provide this free training through the generous support of Walgreens and Safeway.

According to Virginia Capital Region CEO Reggie Gordon, “Thankfully most people would not be confronted with an event the magnitude of the Tucson shootings. However, a 2010 Red Cross survey revealed that one in four people found themselves in a situation where someone needed CPR.  If more people learned hands-only CPR, we would increase the chances of surviving cardiac arrest outside a hospital by putting lifesaving assistance closer to the victims. In fact, our goal is to have every American within 4-minutes of an Automated External Defibrillator and someone trained in CPR.”
